Floral World is an Honours project focusing on ornamentation and surface decoration that apply to the body and artifact. The project relates to my interested areas, bridal design and embroidery. The project explores the flower motif with different embroidery and shibori techniques to create a series of diverse swatches. I was inspired by flower embroidery motifs and amazing handcraft techniques from one embroidery house, Maison Lesage. It has been stitching up lush, rich detailed fabric pieces for couturiers, like Balenciaga, Dior, Schiaparelli and Chanel. To me, flowers represent femininity, love and beauty. It is something that people can quickly associate with weddings. I found out that when many flowers are gathered together, there is a feeling of joy and happiness, which is very similar to a wedding. Therefore, I used various flower prints as my inspiration and mood to create a series of contemporary wedding dress swatches that are not limited by the traditional white wedding dress. My colour palette is colourful and some colours are created when I dye the fabric. At the end, this project contains eight embroidery prototype swatches to represent different types of modern and contemporary wedding dresses.
